Pune --> Bangalore --> Mysore --> Ooty DAY 1

Saturday March 26th 2011

Today, Mummy, Papa and I set off from home at 5am. After waking up before the sun to catch our flight, we got into a cab in the darkness and headed off to the Pune airport. This was the first domestic flight I had ever taken since we returned to India two years ago, so I was more than excited! The flight was on SpiceJet, and was an hour and 5 minutes long. We reached Bangalore in the morning, and it looked gorgeous! Perfectly trimmed plants welcomed us into the Garden City of India, and the car that the travel company had sent was very nice too. We began our journey to Ooty, a hillstation located about 7 hours drive from the Bangaluru airport.

Along the way, we saw many interesting things. People seemed simple, some were dressed in lungis too. Many coconut trees grew, and the sun shone bright. We stopped by on the side of the road for some fresh coconut water, and oh my!, it was amazing! The 10 rupee coconut was sufficient for a full meal, and was absolutely delicious.

We passed by Ramnagar, the town where the movie 'Sholay' was shot.

We arrived in Mysore soon after. It was beautiful. The Mysore Palace was breathtaking, and so well preserved! The 3D paintings which were hung within managed to baffle us, and make us think of how the painters would have achieved such a feat. These paintings were painted at 45 and 90 degree angles, and in them, saree pleats, the faces of people, and the position of the characters all seemed to follow the viewers.

We set off for Ooty after having lunch in a traditional restaurant. Lunch was served on a banana leaf, an *actual* banana leaf (as compared to the banana leaf plates on which South Indian food was served in Singapore). Food was scrumptious, and very filling. The drive to Ooty was wonderful; we passed by a nature reserve. We saw elephants on the road, less than 25 metres away from us. Dozens and dozens of spotted deer reminded me of Bambi, and some even had antlers! A majestic peacock sat by the road, looking for a peahen to impress with its dance. Some wild boar scavenged for food as well. After crossing the Karntaka border, into Tamilnadu, we got closer to Ooty. To reach the hill station, we crossed a few mountains before reaching the last one -one with 36 turns on the way up. The weather grew colder by the second. By the time we reached the top of the mountains, it was freezing and about 8pm. We drove up to the hotel, Club Mahindra, Derby Green.

The lobby looked as if it was taken straight out of an old British movie, with royal-looking sofas. We were taken to our room by golf cart, and the room was amazing. One double bed, with one sofa for me, and a television set. A few gorgeous pictures on the wall of our surroundings.

It was definetly an awesome day!
